4×5 Tintype Session with Jackie Neale

Tintypes are a large format handmade photograph requiring a chemical exposure process using a specialty large format camera and lens. This type of photograph originated in the 1850s, and gained popularity during the American Civil War era. You’ll notice the warm tone quality of these photographs, but also that the subject appears stoic due to the long exposure times; sometimes requiring a 12 second exposure. These types of historical photographs can last for over 100 years.

When preparing for a tintype portrait, it’s recommended to wear lighter colors, as tintype chemistry doesn’t recognize blue and cool tones appear as light grays. While patterns, brocades, lace, or layered clothing photograph quite nicely and add texture to your photograph. Bringing meaningful props to hold as you pose is encouraged to help make the photograph more personal and an heirloom for many generations. No digital cameras are used in this process. It is a physical photograph made directly on a metal plate. It is beautiful and unique, and will contain a very spiritual spontaneity to it.

Pricing:

All tintypes are a physical photograph on 4×5 inch metal and there is a limit of 1–3 people per session. $175 is for the first plate and then $90 each additional plate. I typically shoot a couple of plates to get a tintype plate you really love. You will initially pay for the first plate and will pay additional costs for any additional plates you want to keep. The balance payment (minus deposit) is due at the end of the session and I take cash, check, Paypal or Venmo.

Standard studio sessions are booked in 1 hour blocks. This is enough time for 1, possibly 2 poses. If you would like to do more than 2 poses, please contact me @ studio@jackiephoto.com to schedule a longer session. Bookings and timing cannot be made or changed less than 72 hours in advance. Once you receive an email confirmation and Google Calendar appointment you must click “accept” on the appointment to complete confirmation of your session.

Package Deal: 2 hours, 5 plates for $550 – If you are interested in booking this option please email studio@jackiephoto.com

Delivery:

It will take 7–10 days before you can pick up the finished plate. The tintypes must wash, dry, and rest for a few days  after the shoot to preserve and protect them and keep them archival. The varnish takes 3 days to cure, so I typically mail them through USPS with tracking within 1 week of the shoot. A web quality scan is included in the price and will be emailed to the email address you provide. High-resolution scans available on request and will be sent via email. Tintypes can be picked up at the studio after 7 days. Any plates not picked up within 30 days will be discarded. For an additional shipping cost the plates can be mailed to you. If shipping is desired, please specify this option, provide a mailing address, and pay the additional cost. I will then ship USPS Media Mail with tracking.

Location:

My studio is located in the heart of Collingswood, NJ of Greater Philadelphia, less than a block from the Collingswood PATCO Speedline train station. To get here from Center City Philadelphia it takes 10 minutes by train. The studio is wheelchair accessible. Exact location details provided upon receiving the deposit and confirmation.

Scheduling:

Once you have paid for your session we will select and confirm a date for your tintype portrait session booking. A Calendar will be emailed to you which you are required to “accept” to confirm the booking time. Please arrive 5 minutes early so I can show you to a dressing room and prepare.

Time: Bookings are in 1 hour blocks, which should be enough time for 1-2 poses with wiggle room for test plates. If you would like to do more than 2 poses, please let me know in advance so I can hold more time for our session for an additional cost.

Additional Costs:

ie. additional plates, additional time, additional poses, additional people, on location, shipping, etc… additional costs are circumstance dependent and will be required before the session for some, but full balance tally will be due by the end of your session. Payment is expected to be paid before leaving. I will accept cash, Venmo: @jneale2 or PayPal: jaxx222@yahoo.com (my last 4 digits are 8059).

Reschedule/Cancellation policy:

Sessions are non-refundable. If you need to reschedule for any reason, with at least 48 hours notice you may transfer your payment to a new booking time one time only. If you cannot make a rescheduled appointment, you will forfeit the payment.
