Open Call for Analog and Historical Practices Photographers 2-Week Artist Residency.

Big Day Film Collective is excited to accept submissions from film based, alternative or historical processes photographic artists demonstrating unique concepts and artistry exploring the ideas of AFFECT/effect.
Big Day welcomes all experimental and formal applications of the analog medium, and is looking for artists who need the time and the space to produce work in solitude. This year\’s theme concept is \”AFFECT/effect\” including any creative take on that idea.

Applications are being accepted for 2 – individual 2-week summer artist residencies at Big Day Film Collective are open for submissions. The residencies includes access to black and white darkroom for printing up 11×14, BW medium format processing, space to create alternative practices, a one-day community program and an optional final exhibition of work created while on residency. Private bedroom and bathroom and space to create.

• SUBMISSIONS DETAILS – Incomplete submissions will be disqualified:
  • Open call for submissions of film photography or alternative/historical processes work created no earlier than 2017
  • Project Statement – Use 500 words or less to tell us about your project that you submitted and what you hope to create while at Big Day
  • Artist Statement – Use 500 words or less to tell us about your process and experience with film and/or historical photographic practices
  • CV (Curriculum Vitae)
  • 10 jpgs of recent work –
    • Images must contain the following in the description field of the Image Info Metadata:
      • Image Title
      • Year
      • Size
      • Creation Medium (tri-x film, color neg, digital negative, tintype…etc),
      • Printed Medium (ie, contact print on vandyke brown, silver gelatin print, digital c-print, etc…)
    • Images must be sized to 2800 pixels on the longest dimension
    • \”Saved For Web\” at 63 Quality
    • MUST be named First name Last name and sequence number. No exceptions. ex. firstlastname_01.jpg, firstlastname_02.jpg, firstlastname_03.jpg, etc…
  • Submission fee = $30 payable through the link on the top of the application form below
  • A pdf of receipt of paid submission fee will be required to submit through Application Form
• Deadline EXTENDED for submissions is May 01, 2021 MAY 15, 2021 11:59PM
• Notifications sent June 15, 2021
• Residency 1 Dates – July 15–30, 2021
• Residency 2 Dates – August 1–14, 2021

Big Day Film Collective is located in the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, Collingswood, NJ, subway 10 minutes to Center City Philadelphia, and only 90 miles to New York City.

Terms and Conditions

Artist will be required to:

• Use time on residency to create and/or conduct research to formulate new work
• Peer critiques can be arranged
• Give a community lecture on the first Friday about their work. Big Day will provide an outdoor projection and lectern to present from. This can be a short opening and then Q&A or something longer. It is flexible. It is meant to be a low pressure informal gathering. (2021 – Currently this is conducted from the front porch to a lawn chair public. Also Weather permitting)
• Artist is required to leave behind one artwork created while on residency at Big Day
• Artist is required to respect the professional standards of conduct and occupancy while on premises and in using the darkroom
• Give permission to Big Day Film Collective to use submitted winning images and images produced while on residency for the org website

– All fees must be paid on application. All Applications must have a PayPal receipt submitted through Application Form

– Big Day Film reserves the right to change or alter the program or dates advertised based on unforeseen circumstances, ie. change in CDC guidelines

– The Residency does not include transport, food accommodations or ground expenses. International participants are responsible for travel expenses. Big Day Film Collective is not responsible for any liability or expenses due in the unlikely case the residency is canceled or postponed. We highly recommend that you buy refundable tickets and/or travel insurance.
